This week our class discussed the characters the Duke, Huck, The dauphin, and Jim. In our discussion we talked about who they are and their different primary Goal during the chapters we were in currently. We learned some things about how mean the Duke and the Dauphin are. Other than that we finished the book and found out Jim was actually free for the whole book and that Huck's father was the dead man in the floating house in the beginning of the book. This week we did a couple worksheets on Huck Finn. One being that we had to pick either Huck or Jim and talk about their needs and society's expectations about them. As a class we went over what all of the groups said and saw different answers.Other than the worksheets we read Huck Finn up to chapter 20 so far. We learn in the book Huck and Jim's relationship is growing and becoming stronger because Huck is like a son to Jim. And they are just spending more and more time together. As of where we are in the book we start to learn a little about the new appearances in characters like the two rival families, the Duke, and the Dauphin. Only about half way through the book and we have much to learn. All this week and last week we have been focusing on coping, isolation, and alienation in different forms of examples and stories. We also started reading Huckleberry Finn as a class and we are now up to chapter 11. We learned about Huck and his always drunk, abusive father and how that has in the long run affected Huck. He has no mother because she died when he was two and his father is never really there, sober, to be with Huck and take care of him. This week we learned two new words, isolation and alienation and made a new big question for this marking period. After learning those words we took notes on the side of a poem and a short story and then discussed some points about them as a class. Ending this week, week 6 we finished with the end of the crucible. We discussed that power made a big difference in their decisions and what happened in the story. On Thursday we watched The Twilight Zone and the neighbors all turned on each other making accusations that they were possibly aliens . Given the opportunity they had with power one of the neighbors actually killed another just because he thought i was an alien. We learned that when certain hands get a hold of power things go downhill and have consequences. This week, the week after winter break we finished watching the crucible. The ending wasn't too pleasing I thought. It showed many people being hung. We learned there really was no witches and that this whole thing started by accusing a homeless person and an african american person that wasn't from around there. These accusations could have been made merely just to get rid of them sadly. Most of what went on was just people accusing others they didn't like of witchery to have them be hung. Along with the movie as we read we also filled out our music connections sheet. After the songs were over we shared a couple connections people had. What some people put for the lyrics and why was sometimes very different from what I had down. I learned different perspectives of what others had in the class. This week we mainly learned from what we discuss as a class. All week we watched and read the crucible. While reading, there was a sheet we were given that we connected song lyrics of music we listened to to what we read. This just helped us connect what we watched to a song. In this class I've done a lot of different activities and things that intend to make learning things easier for the students and more fun. During the week I have also been reading my book Contaminated and it's just getting better for me. Though I only read very little numbers of pages a week I'll get done with it soon and enjoy every bit of it too. I have enjoyed this week and learned just mostly more info on the crucible. Only the second week of English 10A. This week we discussed a lot to do with the salem witch trials. How these people, some innocent, were accused of being witches and were tortured to prove that they were. The ways to prove it were cruel and unusual. Pricking small red dots that were supposed to resemble the devils mark with a silver needle, tieing the people to rocks and putting them in water and if they floated they were witches. Putting them in water usually just killed the person anyways because they had to make sure, by time they thought that the person wasn't a witch they drowned. When on this unit I really thought about how people would never do that kind of stuff but it's just that what we do today doesn't seem that extreme as what was done back then. Along with this week we started the crucible movie. Over the rest of the week Monday , Wednesday, and Friday we did SSR. I have actually been really enjoying the book I picked. Contaminated. And I am going to continue to read it and hopefully finish it. I am learning to not dislike English class as much. More fun activity like things have been done and I enjoy that.
